Jeff Payne had his formal musical education at the University of Iowa and the University of North Texas, where he studied trumpet performance on scholarship with David Greenhoe and music composition. He took up the bass as a side instrument and found it came very easy to him and allowed him to express his love of the pocket in a new way. He would put it all into practice four sets a night gigging with various local bands throughout Texas and the Southwest. As a bassist and singer, he worked with an extensive array of performers, including Matt Chamberlain (Saturday Night Live, Tori Amos) and John Gaither.
I think that almost every genre of music has something that makes it compelling to the listener. It’s just a matter of finding the chewy center and digging into it. I’ve always made it a point to find that center and enjoy it, consume it and get dirty with it.
